With the advent of the Single European Market on 1 January 1993, routine internal border controls within the EU on the movement of live animals were dismantled. During 1993, a number of diseases in UK farm livestock were associated with imported animals. An inquiry was held to determine whether the new arrangements to control the importation of live animals were sufficient to safeguard the UK's high animal health status. Section II of this report deals with these issues. Section III examines the UK's anti-rabies laws, while Section IV looks at the potential health risks arising from the importation of all species of animals, birds and fish.
