Synopsis: This is the final report of the Retained Organs Commission, which was formally established on 1st April 2001 as a Special Health Authority by the Secretary of State for Health, and this was the first annual publication from this body published by the Stationery Office. It was initially expected to be wound up in April 2003, but its life was extended until 31 March 2004. The Commission's main aims were to improve the accuracy and completeness of NHS information about the retention of human organs and tissue following post mortem examinations; also to advise the NHS on a range of related policy and governance issues in this field, with the intention of restoring public confidence in the post mortem system. Following the passage of new Government legislation, a new Human Tissue Authority is expected to be set up.
