Synopsis: |
In October 1852, the Patents Law Amendment Act 1852 introduced the world's first 'modern' patent law and established the Patent Office with responsibility for the granting of patents of invention, and during the 1870s, it acquired the responsibility for registering trade marks and industrial designs. It became known as the UK Intellectual Property Office in April 2007, the official government body responsible for granting intellectual property (IP) rights in the UK, and is an Executive Agency of the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). This annual report covers the work of the Office during 2006-2007, during which period the Gowers Review of the UK's IP framework (ISBN 9780118404839) was published. The Gowers Review covered both the instruments (patents, copyright, designs etc.) provided by government to protect creative endeavour, as well as operational issues such as how IP is awarded, licensed in the market and enforced. |
