Synopsis: |
At present women can receive a state pension at age 60, but for men state pension age is 65. This report recommends that state pension ages should be equalized at age 65, with implementation being phased-in over a 15 year period beginning in the year 2000. As well as bringing the UK in line with other European Community countries, such a change would effect a saving of #3 billion. The savings derived from the change should, the report suggests, be used to help vulnerable groups including the low paid, carers, women returners and long-term sick and disabled people. |
