Description: |
Although the diocese of Chichester was poor, its early 13th-century bishops included ecclesiastic careerists, a senior politician and a saint. The documents in this volume offer an opportunity to compare the episcopates and households of these eminent men through their daily administration. |
Synopsis: |
Although the diocese of Chichester was both small and poor, its bishops between 1215 and 1253 included two ecclesiastic careerists, a politician of the highest standing, and a saint. Richard Poore, briefly bishop here, was on his way to greater things, culminating in his episcopate at Durham; Ralph Neville combined his role as Chancellor of the Exchequer with government of the see; and, perhaps most famously, Richard Wich was canonized within ten years of his death. The documents in this volume offer a unique opportunity to compare the episcopates and households of these eminent men through their daily administration. This edition will be complemented by Volume 23, which will take the coverage of Chichester up to 1305. |
