It also examines communalism in provinces, the demand for partition in Punjab and Bengal as well as the role of the last viceroy, volunteer organizations and the problem of refugees and minority groups. The introduction by Sucheta Mahajan situates the movements in the historical context and underlines their importance in the politics of the year 1947.
