Synopsis: |
The Committee's report examines the current state of employment regulation in the UK, in the light of competing concerns of labour market flexibility and workers' rights; as well as looking at the impact of the minimum wage; regulation of agency workers; the Working Time Directive, flexible hours and parental leave. Conclusions drawn include support for the current regulatory balance, including the national minimum wage, as well as for the principles of flexibility allied to social cohesion as set out in the Lisbon Agenda. Although there are abuses in the employment of temporary workers, the Committee remains unconvinced that the Agency Workers Directive is the right way to address these concerns, but argues that the opt-out from the Working Time Directive does not need to be retained as the Directive is sufficiently flexible to accommodate business needs. Flexible working opportunities given to parents of young children should be extended to all those with caring responsibilities. |
