Synopsis: |
The Committee of Public Accounts scrutinises the reasons behind individual departments exceeding their allocated resources, and reports to the House of Commons on whether it has any objection to the amounts needed to rectify the reported excesses. The Committee may also make recommendations to departments concerning the causes of these excesses. In 2013-14, four bodies breached their expenditure limits: (i) The Teachers' Pension Scheme (England & Wales) breached its Resource Annually Managed Expenditure limit by GBP398 million due to an error in its supplementary estimate calculation; (ii) The Department for Education breached its Resource Annually Managed Expenditure limit by GBP166 million. It underestimated by GBP104 million the pension costs of the Local Government Pension Scheme, which includes non-teaching staff at academy trusts and some Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (CAFCASS) staff.; (iii) The Charity Commission breached its Capital Departmental Expenditure Limit by GBP153,000; (iv) The Wales Office breached its Resource Annually Managed Expenditure (AME) limit by GBP723. |
