The author's general conclusions are optimistic, although the darker side of the post-communist picture also receives careful attention. The old, the sick, those unable to adjust to the new situation and members of some minority groups have suffered severely. Former Yugoslavia has been torn apart by ferocious conflicts, which are also analysed in this book. Nevertheless, the initial problems have gradually been overcome and the forces of regeneration have begun to win through. |
