Synopsis: |
In the early 1990s, thousands of companies in Central and Eastern Europe were transferred to private citizens through wholesale privatization schemes such as mass privatization or management-employee buyouts. The general view was that the initial distribution of ownership claims was transitory and that the market mechanism would result in new and more effective owners taking control of these firms in time. This book is the first original study of the post- privatization fate of firms privatized through various wholesale schemes in three leading transition countries - the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia - and provides new insights into the evolution of ownership. Using data on hundreds of firms in each country, the authors respond to questions such as: did privatization lead to more effective owners taking control of firms in these countries? Does ownership structure affect firm performance? Is ownership structure influence by firm performance and firm level characteristics? |
