Synopsis: |
Intended mainly for Brazilian and Mexican students, this is a three-level American English course for young adult beginners and false beginners. Features of the course are: controlled introduction of vocabulary, organized thematically; focus on idiomatic expressions and essential functional language; focus on grammar as meaningful language; balance of the four skills in every unit; varied listening activities and reading texts based on real life situations, personality quizzes, and subjects of relevance to the target students; pronunciation practice; conversation cues to encourage free expression; and frequent recycling and review activities. For each lesson in the Student's Book there is a two-page spread in the Teacher's Book which contains the following features: a description of each activity and its purpose; suggestions for handling each activity in the classroom; answer keys for the exercises in the Student's Book; an answer key for the exercises in the corresponding lesson in the Workbook; and tapescripts of all the taped material for the lesson. The Teacher's Book also includes tests after every fourth unit. These are designed as "exam-style" tests that can be used for formal student assessment. Ideally, the students should be allowed to do each self-test in the Workbook first, followed by some class time devoted to helping them with problem areas, and finally they should be given the test from the Teacher's Book. Throughout the Teacher's Book there is a series of sections entitled "Teacher's Forum" with suggestions for different ways of handling a range of activities. At the end of each lesson in the Teacher's Book there are suggestions for extra activities. These can be used if there is extra time during the lesson, or go back to them later to review particular vocabulary or grammar points. |
