Description: |
This volume is a collection of papers from the British Sociological Association conference, "Worlds of the Future". The central themes of the conference were ethnicity and nationalism in the contemporary world. Older discourses on national sovereignty and statehood are evaluated. |
Synopsis: |
Nationalisms Old and New reviews the perspectives on nation and nationalism grounded in the principles of the Enlightenment, within the broader framework of social and economic change during the late twentieth century. The book combines a range of theoretical approaches with a number of case-studies. Contributors identify and address key themes in the debate about nationalism including: the emergence of new ethnic nationalisms in the aftermath of the break-up of former power blocs such as the USSR; the influence, ironically, of the European Union on the consolidation of ethnic nationalisms in Ireland and Scotland; the reconstitution of ethnic nationalist identity in line with corporate capitalism in Malaysia; the relationship between conceptions of past-present-future in identity construction, globalization and fragmentation; the nation and state theory vs. globalization; new political forms in the European Union; and the deconstruction and reconstruction of state authority within the context of global economic forces. |
