Synopsis: |
During the 18th century, Henry Home achieved fame in Britain as one of Scotland's foremost men of letters. He was distinguished as jurist, literary critic and theorist, philosopher and innovator. His writings cover a range of diverse topics from the history and development of Scottish law, agriculture, critical theory, natural religion, practical and theoretical morality to educational theory and sociology, therefore appealing to a large variety of audiences and readers. The recent increase in scholarly interest in the Scottish Enlightenment has drawn attention to Kames's importance not just in the Scotland of his day, but for the wider intellectual life of Europe. His writings were translated into both French and German, widely read and studied on the continent and in America. Shortly before Home's death in 1782, James Boswell paid him a visit and wrote that his "judgement, memory and vivacity were the same as ever ...". - these qualities are amply reflected in his major works presented here from reliable lifetime editions. |
