This set brings together a collection of texts showing the gradual development of linguistic studies in North America over a period of 250 years. It examines the tradition of work on the indigenous languages of America that culminates in the scholarly monographs published in the early 20th century. |
Synopsis: |
This set brings together for the first time a collection of texts that bear witness to the gradual development of linguistic studies in North America over a period of two and a half centuries. Beginning in the seventeenth century, with the first appearance of manuals written for the practical purpose of enabling English speakers to understand and communicate with the American Indians, the tradition of work on the indigenous languages of America culminates in the scholarly monographs published by Franz Boas and his collaborators at the beginning of the twentieth. Alongside this, there emerges an awareness of the distinguishing characteristics of American English and its independence from British English. The political implications of this divergence are immediately evident. Controversy arises - and continues to the present day - over linguistic innovations that have their origins on the American side of the Atlantic. A third development that leaves its mark on American linguistics is the establishment of historical and comparative Indo-European studies during the course of the nineteenth century. |
