Description: |
This book discusses housing finance in political terms, thus providing a thorough analysis of the mechanisms and principles which are at the heart of current policies, and an understanding of the processes within housing finance. |
Synopsis: |
Understanding Housing Finance offers a distinctive introduction to the subject. Instead of discussing housing finance in accounting or economic terms, this book considers housing finance politically. It is finance that makes housing consumption, housing management and housing development possible, but in order to understand housing finance we need to appreciate the mechanisms and principles which are at the heart of current policies. Understanding Housing Finance covers the development of housing finance by concentrating on the main political mechanisms. The book develops two main themes. Firstly, is the manner in which central government aims to regulate housing through a control over financial mechanisms. The key to understanding housing finance is this political control Governments, be they Conservative or Labour, have felt the need to extend and maintain political control over housing and it is this that makes finance so important. The second theme is the shift towards personal subsidies. The book looks at the development of housing subsidies to individuals, instead of subsidies to build new dwellings. The political approach aims to show the links between the main tenures and the importance of unintended consequences in the development of policy. Understanding Housing Finance is an accessible and relevant introduction for those beginning their studies or can be a useful reference for more advanced students. There are clear learning objectives and summaries in each chapter, as well as annotated further reading. Learning activities are highlighted throughout the text and are designed to assist the reader in developing issues or for reflection on important principles. A full glossary is also provided. |
