Synopsis:
Formative Britain AD 400-1100 provides a detailed study of the archaeology of Britain and its inshore islands between AD 400 and 1100. For the first time a single-author book treats early medieval Britain as a whole, enabling Carver to show that the primary cultural, political and ideological foundations of the island's population were laid during this time. The book is divided into three parts. The first part reviews the geographical and political contexts, the sources and the topics that dominate the subject today providing context. The second part presents and interprets the archaeological evidence in three periods (early, middle and late) and the concluding part offers discussion on five themes relating to the people living in Britain in the first millennium and what archaeology has to say about them. Formative Britain AD 400-1100 is the first book in a generation that presents the archaeology of this period in such a comprehensive fashion for the whole of Britain. This is a crucial purchase for those people wishing to understand how the islands of Britain developed in the early Medieval period.
