Synopsis: Conventional narratives of war and peace tend to project an over-simplistic vision of male soldiers, fighters and protectors, with women largely relegated to the side-lines of the battlefield as peacemakers, bridge-builders or victims. While their war-time roles and experiences are now finally receiving the academic attention they deserve, the field of combatant women and conflict resolution however remains largely unexplored. This book stems from a simple `feminist curiousness' that can be succinctly summed up into a single question, what happens to combatant women after the war?Based on semi-structured interviews with forty research participants, mostly former combatants within the IRA, this book utilises gender as its primary category of analysis in order to examine how gender fundamentally informs the ways in which conflict resolution is negotiated within a non-state militant nationalist movement, contributing important new insights and understandings to the global feminist conversation on gender, war and conflict transition. The book represents an important intervention in the field of women and conflict transition and is analytically significant in its exploration of the ways in which masculinities and femininities operate within non-state military movements emerging from conflict, it will be of interest to students and scholars alike. .
