Description: |
A practical guide to the everyday multidisciplinary management of visual impairment in childhood. |
Synopsis: |
Management of visual impairment in childhood requires input from such a wide range of medical and nonmedical disciplines that it presents serious problems in the delivery of co-ordinated and appropriate care. This book is a practical rather than theoretical guide and is aimed at all who are involved in the day-to-day management of children with visual impairment including paediatricians, educationalists, ophthalmologists and social workers. Over 17 experts have contributed so that it covers a wide range of topics from the epidemiology of childhood blindness to its prevention. Chapters include visual assessment in early life and the opthalmic and neurological causes of visual impairment. The effects of this impairment on development, behaviour and the family are discussed. Four chapters on management deal with community and opthalmic aspects, and the multiply impaired child. The final section deals with various educational topics ranging from access to the curriculum through to the challenge of technology. |
