Description: |
An innovative book where the authors successfully make the connection between music, a people and a way of life. |
Synopsis: |
With western music aggressively promoted in the education system, most Japanese are more familiar with this tradition than with their own musical heritage. This book seeks to redress the balance. An international team of scholars come together to explore and explain the complexities of Japanese music and its history. The book begins with an introduction composed by the editors which situates Japanese music within Japanese cultural history. It then moves on to consider the standard classical genres such as court music, Buddhist chant, theatre music, chamber music, as well as folk and contemporary music. Each chapter is hosted by an expert in the respective field. The last two chapters focus specifically on popular music and classical composition where a strong western influence is in evidence. This is an important book on a neglected field, where the authors successfully make the connection between music, a people and a way of life. |
