Synopsis: |
The second volume in a study of Franco-British relations, this work traces the very different experiences of France and Britain in World War II and their consequences. After the trauma of occupation, post-war France became committed to a new concept of Europe, whilst Britain stood aloof. The '60s and '70s were a period of division and self-doubt for Britain, but France experienced a period of self-regeneration. These developments are fully explored in this account of the half-century since 1940 - one of a long separation between the two countries. The author assesses the long-term implications of Franco-British relations, implications which go far beyond the diplomatic interaction between the two countries, into pan-European relations. |
