Synopsis: As the cost of local processing steadily decreases and the functionality increases, more equipment is computer controlled. However there still remains a requirement for centralization of system control and data collection away from the physical equipment, and in the extreme, the development of Internet protocols enables global access wherever there is communication. Originally the high cost of equipment effectively ensured that installing wiring was not a substantial overall project cost. However as equipment becomes increasingly mobile and cheaper, the cabling issue becomes increasingly important to successful and rapid system deployment. Wireless communication is the ideal solution to providing this ability to rapidly deploy equipment and maintain mobility. Wireless communication is a strictly regulated environment with only very few frequencies available for general use. This report examines the regulatory issues involved with "license free" operation as well as their worldwide variations. The issues addressed in the report are as follows: what options are available for short-range wireless communications? What are their respective limitations? What are the potential application areas? What are the implications on system design? The report raises the issues connected with short-range wireless communication. It examines various systems from low data-range solutions for which equipment is both small and relatively cheap, through to Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Wireless Area Networks (WANs). For completeness, the report also contains a brief summary of some alternative approaches using commercial networks. There are a multitude of applications to which this technology can be applied and some of these are suggested in the two supplementary reports that are included, of which both industrial and home applications are covered.
