Synopsis: |
The village of Hinton Ampner lies in an unspoilt sweep of chalk countryside, a cluster of cottages round the parish church and the manor house. Until it was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1986, the Hampshire estate of Hinton Ampner had been in the hands of the Stewkeley, Stawell and Dutton families for nearly 400 years. This delightful account of the history of the house and the people connected with it was written by the 8th and last Lord Sherborne, who completely remodelled the unattractive Victorian mansion he inherited and created the magnificent garden. The house is typical of countless smaller country houses in which the quality of life was in many ways more enviable than that in the greater houses. The author Ralph Dutton, the 8th and last Lord Sherborne, died in 1985 at the age of 86. He worked at the College of Arms, at Lloyd's and wrote a number of witty and erudite books while serving on committees of the National Trust, the National Art Collections Fund, and as a trustee of the Wallace Collection. |
