When the first section of the future London Underground network opened, it represented the first serious attempt to use railways as a means of improving public transport access into the heart of a pre-existing urban environment. Steam, however, was not an ideal means of propulsion in long tunnel sections and it was not until the development of electric traction in the late 19th century that the concept of the tube network became practical.
