Synopsis: |
An increase in ethnic violence in Asia in recent years has generated a wealth of publications, conferences and recommendations on the subject. This volume assesses the inter-relation between the media and ethnic violence in Asia, and is written by local authors. Focusing on newspapers and television, the contributors examine the role of communication media in the management of ethnic relations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and Sri Lanka. The study, based on empirical data, reveals that the media can contribute significantly to ethnic peace and harmony. But, as the authors demonstrate, the same media can become enmeshed with ethnic loyalties and the cultivation of ethnic constituencies. Similarly, education is a crucial factor in the nurturing of understanding among different cultural groups. The authors show that this requires a carefully planned programme working through various institutions in society such as the school, the temple/church, mass media, family and other civic organisations. |
