Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), pioneered in the early 1960s, is now recognized as a method of elemental analysis of extraordinary capability, with wide applications in industry and in studies of the environment. The second edition of this practical handbook includes many recent developments in ICP methodology, and expands the areas of application to important fields such as metals and archaeological materials. Developments in instrumentation since publication of the first edition are presented, and the theory and practice of ICP Mass Spectrometry are described. The authors begin by reviewing the development of ICP-AES, its analytical characteristics and advantages, and the instrumentation, and then concentrate on applications within the geological and environmental sciences, offering sound advice on the methodology and optimal use of the equipment. Appendices are included on safety and the principal manufacturers of ICP systems and accessories. This book should be of interest to analytical chemists in general; geochemists, soil scientists and hydrologists. |
