Individual chapters cover a brief history of the study of mills; the prehistory of milling; the introduction of mechanical milling by the Romans; the Anglo-Saxon mills; medieval mills, whether monastic, castle-based or secular; post-medieval and modern mills. The work is completed by a full glossary of technical terms and a bibliography for further reading.
