Description: |
A biography of Katherine Willoughby, focusing on 1546, when she almost became Henry VIII's seventh queen |
Synopsis: |
In 1546 there were rumours that Henry VIII wanted to annul his marriage to Katheryn Parr and marry her close friend and lady-in-waiting Katherine Willoughby, the dowager Duchess of Suffolk. Young, attractive, feisty, intelligent and devoutly religious, perhaps most importantly she had already given birth to two sons. The king even agreed to the arrest of Katheryn Parr on the grounds of heresy, but she successfully persuaded him of her innocence and charmed her way back into his affections. Katherine Willoughby would go on to reject the proposal of the King of Poland and marry for love, then a rather radical idea. She gave up wealth, power and even her Protestant faith to wed one of her servants, before fleeing to the Continent, not to return to England until after Henry's death. Kelly Hart's biography of this fascinating woman brings her story up to date using recent research, and focuses on the events of 1546: was Henry really thinking of making the young widow his seventh wife? |
