This is a comprehensive biography of an encyclopedic polymath that interprets his life in relation to the political, intellectual, and religious currents of the Seventeenth Century. Samuel Chappuzzeau is not well known today outside of Seventeenth-Century Theater scholarship. This biography reveals that he played a role in advancing Moliere's career, and also made his living as a 'man of letters', with publications in several genres, covering a period of fifty years. He was a play-wright, novelist, poet, and translator, with interests in geography, writing travel books, and acted as a noted traveler. During the composition of his final and most ambitious work, a four volume encyclopedia, he corresponded with many leading scholars including Leibniz and Bayle. In this book, the authors challenge their audience to re-examine Chappuzzeau's life and work in an attempt to put him firmly at the heart of European intellectual and cultural life in the seventeenth century. |
