Synopsis: |
The titlepage lie that the "Lady's Monthly Museum" was conducted "by a society of ladies" to "exalt the character of the British fair" is only one of several deceptions practised by this popular magazine. For the first two years the magazine provided explicit "guidance" in its own reviews of contemporary works, but in essay and story throughout the first series, indirection was its tactic, the advocacy of conservative values its goals. This volume constitutes a study of the first series of the "Lady's Monthly Museum", providing an annotated index under contributors' names, pseudonymous signature, and ascriptions. |
