Synopsis: This Elusive Land introduces readers to women'sperceptions and experiences of the Canadian natural environment. Thismultidisciplinary anthology discusses the ways in which women integratethe social and biophysical settings of their lives, featuring a rangeof contexts and issues in which gender mediates, inspires, and informsa sense of belonging to and in this land. In particular, the historicalassociation of women with "domestic" nature is challenged bythe investigation of women's lives in a broad range ofenvironments. The collection begins with an introduction to literatures on womenand the environment, and to Canada within ecological feministconversations. The first section discusses the invisibility of women intraditional accounts of Canada's exploration and settlement, pointing to the literary, historical, and geographic significance ofwomen's experiences in a variety of landscapes. Section twodevelops the ways in which the natural environment is a source ofsocial and economic livelihood, with particular emphasis on fishery, forestry, agriculture, and parks. The third section exploresenvironmental politics through a feminist perspective. The bookconcludes with a discussion of new directions for a culturally andecologically diverse Canadian environment. This book contributes to women's studies through itsenvironmental focus; informs environmental studies with a range offeminist perspectives; and complements Canadian studies by integratingdisciplinary perspectives of the Canadian experience from thehumanities and social sciences.
