Synopsis: The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln houses one of America's finest collections of twentieth-century sculpture. In addition to the major art historical landmarks that reflect the achievements of more than a century of collecting by the Nebraska Art Association and the University of Nebraska, the gallery has recently added monumental sculptures that provide a more comprehensive representation of artists currently contributing to the medium. Some of the most intriguing and influential pieces in the collection are represented in this volume. An introductory essay by David Cateforis provides a historical perspective on the development of sculpture as a medium. Essays by the current director, Janice Driesbach, as well as one by the former director, Norman A. Geske, provide thorough documentation of the development of the collection. The curator of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Daniel A. Siedell, is the primary contributing essayist. All of the 90 pieces selected from more than 350 works in the collection are presented here in full colour, each accompanied by a brief discussion of the artist and his or her work by leading scholars in the field as well as authorities on the collection. The essays examine the works of sculptors represented in the Sheldon's collection, including Rodin, Calder, Duchamp, Barlach, Brancusi, and Moore, and present a concise yet comprehensive overview of pertinent scholarship that will be of value to both students and experts in the field. Karen O. Janovy is the curator of education at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is the co-editor and co-compiler (with Norman A. Geske) of The American Painting Collection of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery (Nebraska 1988).Janice Driesbach is the director of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden. Her books include "Art of the Gold Rush" and "Direct from Nature: The Oil Sketches of Thomas Hill". Norman A. Geske is a professor emeritus of art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the former director of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. David Cateforis is an associate professor of art history at the University of Kansas.
