Hermann Boeschenstein wurde 1900 in Stein am Rhein (Schweiz) geboren. Er doktorierte 1924 in Rostock bei Emil Utitz und reiste in den folgenden Jahren - zuerst als Tourist, dann als Einwanderer - nach Kanada. Ueber fuenfzig Jahre lang war er als Professor und Gelehrter in Kanada taetig. Schon bald war er - neben Barker Fairley - der angesehenste Germanist des Landes. Unter seinen vielen Veroeffentlichungen zur deutschen Literatur ragt seine Studie Deutsche Gefuehlskultur (2 Baende, 1954 und 1966) hervor - ein einzigartiger Versuch, die Entwicklung des Gefuehls in der deutschen Dichtung historisch nachzuvollziehen. In diesem Band - der als Begleitband zu Boeschensteins englischen Essays (Band 34 dieser Reihe) zu verstehen ist - erscheinen seine deutsch geschriebenen Aufsaetze zur Literatur und Philosophie, die sowohl seine lebenslange Suche nach den der deutschen Literatur innewohnenden humanistischen Werten als auch seine persoenliche Toleranz und Humanitaet veranschaulichen. |
