Synopsis: The Song of Songs is a collection of love poems written to explore and celebrate human love. Within the positive endorsement of human sexuality and affection lies a secondary, but important, element of sapiential instruction--the conception of love as dangerous, powerful, threatening to marriage, and potentially harmful to the individual lover. This reading of the Song is set in the context of the Old Testament, Jewish traditional writings, and the New Testament. It is discovered that this understanding of love is constant throughout this literature, and especially characteristic of wisdom texts. Love, while joyously celebrated, is also a dangerous threat to human life, a power that must be respected. « George M. Schwab's study of the Song of Songs brings to prominence a long-neglected dimension of the book's message. Although the song celebrates love and sexuality, it is not unalloyed in its expression of passion. As Schwab so deftly points out, the poems of the Song warn the reader of the dangers of this intense emotional experience. Schwab brings his considerable talents to bear in this careful and thorough study that will change the way we read this powerful collection of love poetry. From now on every serious student of the Song will have to take Schwab's thesis into account. I wholeheartedly recommend it. (Tremper Longman III, Robert H. Gundry, Professor of Biblical Studies, Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California)
