Synopsis: |
Kemmel Hill, better known as Mont Kemmel, commands an extensive view of the Belgian Flanders plain and was used in the Great War of 1914-1918 as an observation post by countless allied gunners, staff officers and sound rangers. Its position, centred to the west of Ypres and Armentiares and east of Poperinghe and Bailleul, was of critical importance until it was overrun by the Germans in the bitter fighting of April 1918. The village of Kemmel, positioned on the eastern base of the hill, and its surrounding hamlets were well known to the thousands of troops who were based in these back areas of the front line facing the southern slopes of the Messines Ridge. This book tells of the countless little-known actions, the activities of the men who served there and the many places of interest making up this very important, much battered area of the old Western Front. Written in the same style as A Walk Round Plugstreet the stories told are well supported by detailed maps and many photographs. |
