Synopsis: "Religion and Society in Northern Europe since the Reformation" was the theme of a conference held at the University of Kent to launch an international exhibition with the same title. The exhibition, involving scholars and art experts from Britain, Holland, France, Belgium and Germany, brought together some beautiful and rare items, including a 17th-century cope and altar frontal, 18th-century eucharistic vestments, a Calvinist communion beaker, a Lutheran chalice, Anglican flagons and a baptismal bowl, Dutch and Scottish collecting shoes, and a complete parochial library in its cupboard. The sub-themes of the exhibition are reflected in the contents of this volume: The impact of the Reformation on society, exemplified by a study of Utrecht; religious minorities, such as the Protestants in Belgium and Walloons in Canterbury; the relationship between religious and secular dimensions of society - career patterns in Church of England clergy, politicizing Catholicism in France; the intellectual and social impact of religion demonstrated for instance, in the administration of poor relief in northern Germany; and the expression of post-Reformation theology in liturgy and architecture.
