Description: |
This collection of essays illuminates the history of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, showing how it has retained its distinctive identity and made a unique contribution to the University of Cambridge through the four centuries since its foundation. |
Synopsis: |
Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, founded by Lady Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex and aunt of the poet Philip, received its charter in 1596. This volume, compiled to celebrate the quatercentenary of the College, draws on its largely unexplored archives and on the evidence of excavations to illuminate the history of the College. Subjects covered include: the Franciscan monastery which existed on the site before the College; the life, work and circle of Lady Frances and Sir Philip Sidney; the foundation and builing of the College; the early years of the library; the Sidney men who were among the first Puritan emigrants to America; the story of the head of the College's most famous alumnus, Oliver Cromwell, and how it came to rest in the ante-chapel; the attempts of James II to impose a Roman Catholic master; Dr Johnson's visit to the College; the development of the College's estate at Cleethorpes; the scientific contribution made by Fellows at the beginning of the 20th century; and the conception and building of the neo-Baroque Chapel in the same period. |
