Synopsis: |
...which saw this genteel, middle class, Edwardian woman embraced by people from what must have seemed to her extremely alien environments. But she is perhaps better known for her invaluable contribution to the folk dance revival in the early years of the twentieth century to the evolution of the English Folk Dance Society. She was, too, the major force behind the foundation of the International Folk Music Council in the years following the Second World War. Maud Karpeles was a key figure in the life and work of Cecil Sharp, in whose shadow she has for so long been hidden. This book bring her out into the light. It is not a critical biography, nor does it attempt an academic analysis of the context in which she moved and viewed the world. This is Maud's story, told mostly in her own words, from previously unpublished sources. |
