Synopsis: |
This never-before-published autobiography of Meta Berger (1873-1944) describes her transformation from a reticent young housewife to an outspoken advocate for socialism, public education, women's rights, and peace. A daughter of German immigrants and the wife of Victor Berger -- a Socialist Party leader, newspaper editor, and U.S. congressman from Milwaukee -- Meta writes movingly of her husband's plight and her own during World War I, when his antiwar activism led to conviction under the Espionage Act and exclusion from Congress. Berger was one of the first women on the Milwaukee school board and on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents. |
