Frank O'Hara is one of the most important twentieth century American poets.This book remains the single most substantial collection of O'Hara's poems after the Collected Poems (UC Press 1995). *Substantial new material: The new introduction by Bill Berkson has a general applicability to O'Hara as a whole, not simply to these poems, and Berkson is widely regarded as one of the country's foremost living O'Hara experts (and personal connections) so it's a real major addition to the title. Several episodes of season 2 of the television series Mad Men reference O'Hara's collection of poetry, Meditations in an Emergency. The first episode shows a character reading from it, as does the last episode, which uses the book's title as its episode title. In the twelfth episode, Don Draper finds his copy of Meditations in an Emergency in Anna Draper's home in California.In the season 1 episode of the HBO series Bored to Death, "The Case of the Missing Screenplay", the main character loses a screenplay written by Jim Jarmusch about the life of Frank O'Hara. 50th anniversary of "Lunch Poems" (City Lights) is 2014; City Poet: The Life and Times of Frank O'Hara by Brad Gooch will be reissued 2013 (HarperCollins). |
