Description: |
Two plays from the 1940s by the most important Canadian playwright of the postwar period. |
Synopsis: |
Robertson Davies' literary work has been credited with helping Canadians understand the value of culture in a nation's identity. The cultural themes in his much-acclaimed novels were foreshadowed in the plays he wrote around the mid-point of "Canada's century." Fortune, My Foe, Davies' first successful full length play, was written for Kingston's International Players in 1948. Rave notices for the Kingston and Ottawa Drama League production followed, and the play has been produced over one hundred times. The second volume of plays by Robertson Davies also includes his popular one act farce, Eros at Breakfast, first performed in 1948. A recent immigrant and two professors of literature try to find support for an artistic project, but meet incomprehension and indifference from smug middle class Canadians, in the wry satire, Fortune, My Foe. (3 acts, cast 7 males, 3 females) Eros at Breakfast explores first love, and how it affects the "inner man" - a decidedly different viewpoint! (1 act, cast 4 males, 1 female) |
