Description: |
Critically reviews recent research into drug addiction and advances in clinical therapy techniques. Contributors discuss areas including: neurobiological, neurochemical and neuroanatomical aspects of opiate tolerance and addiction; opiate addiction in pregnancy; and relapse prevention. |
Synopsis: |
Addiction is one of the greatest problems of our age, whether involving "socially acceptable" drugs such as alcohol, or "hard" drugs such as opiates. Many physicians, both specialists and generalists, are therefore increasingly finding that they have to meet the challenge posed by addiction. This volume critically reviews recent research and advances in clinical therapy techniques. Based on the well-known biopsychosocial model of addiction, this book looks at a variety of topics. In the first part, neurobiological, neurochemical and neuroanatomical aspects of opiate tolerance and addiction are discussed. In the second part, opiate addiction in pregnancy and in the newborn, epidemiological approaches and psychiatric comorbidity are dealt with. Part Three then looks at practical clinical approaches to relapse prevention, psychosocial treatment, methadone substitution and prospects for the development of pharmacological treatment of substance abuse. Published under the auspices of of the International PTD Committee, this volume is intended for students as well as clinicians and researchers, and for anyone making or evaluating public policy. |
