Synopsis: This work examines the premise that illusion is an undervalued concept in literary studies, but one that is central to an understanding of the works of Henry James. The author links James to the common Victorian supposition that novels operated as occasionally dangerous illusions, and documents this in terms of gender in The Portrait of a Lady, political revolution in The Princess Cossamassima, publicity in The Bostonians and sexual desire in The Tragic Muse. The book combines literary and social aspects in its concluding discussions of two famous novels of James's 'late' phase, The Wings of the Dove and The Golden Bowl. A Certain Illusion is a book which will appeal to those not only interested in James but also in theoretical questions pertinent to nineteenth-century English and American literature.
