Synopsis: |
Hugh Williams Hugh was born in the West Country in 1946, educated at Eton and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1970. In the late 1980's Hugh became increasingly concerned by the ever-extending grasp of the EU and when, in 1992, the Conservative government refused to give the UK electorate a referendum on the Maastricht, he felt that was a gross betrayal of our national interests and he stopped supporting that party. He started voting for UKIP in 1997. This was no mean change of heart because Hugh's father, Commander A M Williams, had been a Conservative MP, so too had his maternal grandfather, Colonel W H Carver, and so too, in a way, had his paternal grandfather, J C Williams, who was a Liberal Unionist MP (this party joined the Conservative Party in 1912.) Hugh's brother, F J Williams, had also fought hard to become a Conservative MP and Hugh himself had been chairman of the Fulham Young Conservatives in 1972. So betraying that heritage took some "bottle" but Hugh was so concerned at the direction the EU was heading, he could no longer support the Conservatives and he began voting UKIP.As he emerged from the polling booth the first time he voted UKIP, rather than feeling he had let his heritage down, he actually felt relieved ("cleansed" being his word) because, at last he had voted for what he believed in.This conversion resulted in him standing as a UKIP candidate eight times at different levels and gradually getting to know UKIP's hierarchy; which, in turn led him to be elected to the party's National Executive Committee and becoming their deputy treasurer and national treasurer between 2010 and 2015.While working for the party, Hugh compiled 101 Reasons why we should leave the EU. Although he tried hard to get the party to publish the booklet, they left the matter in his hands and so this is why this widely read booklet has been published by St Edward's Press Ltd.Hugh can be contacted on info@stedwardspress.co.uk |
