Strange things are afoot in the village of Newton. Many of the villagers wake up on April 1st to find a delivery on their doorstep - a cream bag, topped off with a pretty pink bow. Inside sits a little fish tank. Two baby African land snails stare out from it, along with a small bag of peat, a stick of cucumber and a letter with instructions on how to keep the pet snails. Nine-year old Amy, who already has snails, hasn't had a delivery. She wants to know why best friend Charlie has. The two girls, both detectives-in-the-making, set out to try and solve the mystery of who has delivered the snails, and why? Could it be an April fool's joke as the grown-ups think? Or is there something more sinister going on? The girls decide to go snail hunting high up on Zig Zag Common. When Jack overhears their plans, then goes missing in the middle of the night, there's big trouble. In the meantime, the girls make an amazing discovery. It will secure the future of the village church for ever. The plot takes many twists and turns before the grown-ups are left with very red, but very grateful faces. A fast-paced but homely tale. |
