Synopsis: imprint is an irregular periodical, dedicated to the work of a single artist; in-depth and in print. The focus is on analytical text and images across a broad range of series, or an entirely visual exploration of a singular concept. Future issues include unseen early abstract works from the 1950's by legendary artist and film-maker William Klein, and the very latest unpublished works from American twins Doug & Mike Starn. Each issue will be a collaboration between a particular artist and designer, to produce a unique object. imprint #1 explores the earliest work of British Artist Ian McKeever (RA), from 1975-1990 - a rare opportunity to be fully immersed in the dynamic first two decades of a long and distinguished career. The transition from a dialogue with drawing, painting and photography to an engagement with pure painting is highlighted; this movement at the same time mirroring the transition in the work from landscape to abstraction. At 112 pages, imprint #1 is beautifully printed with over 75 colour illustrations and a substantial essay by Mark Prince. The dialectical method of Ian McKeever is examined in depth, along with the wider context of contemporary art made during this period: the relationship between early conceptual art of the 60's and 70's, modernism and post-modernism, refracted by the long history of traditional British Landscape Art; the role of landscape as a pretext for a process, rather than as subject or object, and the tension between the differing modes of representation and material qualities of photography, painting and drawing.
