Synopsis: Over the last two decades, the University of Cincinnati has created a campus renowned for its internationally recognized architecture and planning. One of the most compelling contributions to this program is Moore Ruble Yudell's Joseph A. Steger Student Life Centre. The center plays multiple roles as an eye-catching landmark, a backdrop to the spaces around it and as a frame for vistas providing clear pathways through a dense urban campus. A complex structure, it is nearly 600 curving feet in length and 55 feet high, creating a long, thin envelope treated as a penetrable ribbon-like form. The dense mix of academic, social and retail facilities inside the building, which includes an art gallery, retail store, coffee shop and student government offices, is inseparable from the surrounding campus spaces.By blurring the distinction between interior and exterior, architecture and landscape, the building provides a new model for major campus developments. Moore Ruble Yudell is an architectural design and planning firm that provides services for projects on campuses, for facilities with civic and cultural uses, and for commercial and residential clients. When honored by the American Institute of Architects with the 2006 Architecture Firm Award, Moore Ruble Yudell was cited for having 'consistently produced an outstanding body of work rooted in a deep commitment to humanistic architecture'.
