Synopsis: |
"Barnaby and His Brittle Bones is metaphorical. It does not depict a boy who has brittle bones disease. Rather, it tells the story of a boy who has brittle bones in his pockets. I was motivated to write it by a colleague who has Brittle Bone Disease, and I thought to move away from emphasizing the obviously painful, and only painful side of 'bones' and to do something creative with it in order to find some way towards the light. One does not have a choice in keeping or doing away with a disease, but they can choose other positive aspects of life around them, such as love, kindness, and to fight for life, as Barnaby chooses to fight for his life and swim home. Barnaby, in the end, chooses love and not the brittle bones in his pockets." |
