Synopsis: |
Women in Journalism at the Fin de Siecle: Making a Name for Herself offers a fascinating introduction to the work and lives of twelve significant women journalists in Britain at the turn of the century. As the nineteenth century drew to a close, women became increasingly numerous and prominent in British journalism, promoting themselves as never before, and capitalizing in new ways on the changing conditions of journalism. Treating redoubtable Victorians like Frances Power Cobbe and Eliza Lynn Linton as well as turn-of-the-century iconoclasts like Rosamund Marriott Watson, each essay examines the career, writing, and strategic choices of women battling the odds to secure recognition and reward in a male-dominated industry. These journalists engaged with a wide array of periodical titles and topics, intervening in some of the most pressing debates of the day: colonial politics, labour conditions, cultural and literary debates, and aspects of the Woman Question including suffrage, childcare, and marriage law. |
