This book asks a series of pressing questions of teacher educators, teachers and teacher unions worldwide in this era of global capitalism. As governments around the world support austerity politics in the face of financial melt-downs, social inequalities, terrorist threats, climate catastrophe, wars and mass migrations, Teachers and Teacher Unions in a Globalised World asks: are practitioners in teaching and teacher education merely to succumb to pressures to dismantle their nation-state systems of education? England is a prime example of a country where successive neoliberal governments have incrementally opened up public education to the interests of quasi-marketisation, privatisation and corporatisation. The impending reforms to reconfigure Ireland's national system of schooling seem by every indication to reflect ever closer ties with the situation in England. In light of this, Carr and Beckett present a clearly argued case in Ireland for teachers and teacher educators organising in order to realise their moral and social responsibilities of free and fair schooling for all when it is most needed.This is simultaneous to insisting on professional and public policy debates, both global and regional, as well as national and local, about a free publicly-funded school system.
