Synopsis: The Music Learning Profiles Project: Let's Take This Outside uses ethnographic techniques and modified case study analysis to profile musicians active in a wide range of musical contexts not typically found in institutional music education settings, such as popular and vernacular music. The book illuminates diverse music learning practices in order to impact music education in classrooms, lecture halls, and beyond. It also describes the Music Learning Profiles Project: a group of scholars dedicated to developing ethnographic techniques and modified case study analysis to explore music learning, which they call "flash study analysis." Compiling many smaller profiles over time has generated large pools of data from which the authors have begun to draw nuanced understandings of the myriad approaches to music learning emerging from the early part of the 21st century. More than 30 musicians have been interviewed. The data presented were collected through semi-structured interviews, with each member of the co-author team using the same standard 13-item questionnaire. Interviewees were asked to talk about what they do, to describe how they learned to do this, to identify key learning experiences, to talk about involvement in formal or institutionalized learning environments, and to discuss how they see musicking practices passing to a future generation. The authors rely on classic ethnographic case study research techniques, including interviewing, informal and formal observations, prolonged engagement, and maximum variation sampling. Such qualitative methods afford in-depth understanding of participants' music learning experiences, perhaps more than might be garnered through other methods such as surveys or questionnaires.
